Antarctica Cruises and Tours

By

First discovered in 1819, Antarctica still remains an enticing spot for adventurers. Prior to its discovery, the continent was exposed to continuous speculation, looked upon as a mythical destination and the coinage given to it was that of- “the Unknown Southern Land”. It was captured by humans for the first time in 1899.Antarctica at that point of time was unwelcoming and could not be comprehended and till date it remains so.

Antarctica is the biggest existing fascination of the world and  is still comparatively uncontaminated by humans. It spawns across an area of 13.7 million sq km around the Southern Pole and remains ice covered to an extent or depth of 4km.Here, there is no permanent population of human beings. There are only about some personnel staffed across 60 research stations administered by various nations. Also, Scientists from different countries collaborate on projects related to research here.

Things to Do: The most convenient way to reach there is by taking a cruise/ferry which start their journey from Ushuaia (Argentina) or Punta Arenas (Chile) and the distance from South America to the Antarctic Peninsula takes about two days. Antarctica is entertaining more tourist-orientated cruises every year, and more and more facilities are being developed so that accommodation and travelling opportunities can be provided. There is also a scope to climb up Mount Erebus, an active volcano on the southernmost part of the Earth.

One can also visit by boats, the famous penguin colonies; and can capture some ecstatic experience with a growing wildlife, with a variety of birds, seals and large whales. Every year hundreds of researchers come here to gather important information about the continent and the diverse ecosystem of the world. Antarctica is a storehouse of multifarious information, from the climatic system of the world, to the forecast of the sea level in the future, to the boundaries the Earth’s atmosphere.

Antarctica Cruises and Tours

Some believe that the continent is changing rapidly and to a great extent due to the ever multiplying needs of the human kind. Many attribute this fact to the enhancing focus on tourism. In 2010 itself, around 80000 tourists are expected to visit this continent. This is a matter of great concern as this frenzy for touring in Antarctica might cause more and more damage to its surroundings.

However, Antarctica still remains a land of magic and wonders which would attract tourists at any given point of time. Those who do go there, should be conscious of their effect upon the landscape and try their best to restrict that negative impact.
