The Auckland Zoo has the largest collection of animals in New Zealand and is widely regarded as one of the most popular zoos in the world. Auckland Zoo Animal & Birds Exhibits

It has already won many national and international awards. The zoo has more than 700 animals from over 117 different species. There are many exciting and rare species of animals like the African Clawed Frog, African Crested Porcupine, African Grey Parrot, African Lion, American Alligator, Archey’s Frog et al.

The Auckland Zoo is regarded as one of the most progressive zoos in the world and they have been very successful in implementing the ‘enrichment’ program. This program actually aims to better the environment of the animals in the zoo. This helps to bring out the natural behavior of the animals. The exhibits are changed from time to time; variation is brought about in the presentation of the food and also introduces new items in their enclosures so that they can play with it.

The animals and birds in the Auckland Zoo are housed in different exhibits –

1) ASB Elephant Clearing – here you can meet with the only Asian elephant of the country.

2) Aussie Walkabout – as the name suggests you can come face to face with a lot of animals from Australia. Enjoy the close encounters with emu, wallabys, kangaroos and rainbow lorikeets.

5) Visa Tiger Territory – If you have the courage then do visit the ferocious animals of the wild, the Sumatran tigers.

During summer the zoo opens at 9:30 in the morning and closes at 5:30 pm. Many are not aware that the Auckland Zoo has good dining options. So you need not worry about your lunch. The Darwin’s café has a good range of hot and cold food and picnic boxes for the kids. Lion’s Larder is a similar eatery located beside the elephant exhibit.

The Wild Zone Gift Shop is the place to buy the souvenirs, gifts and apparels.
