Distance learning used to have a negative stigma attached to it. Before online schools existed, distance learning was mostly done through mail correspondence, was less personal and you rarely had any interaction with professors or other students. This all changed with the advent of online schools. Although online schools had a shaky beginning in the late 1990’s, they continue to improve with each year.

Despite vast improvements, there is still a fair amount of skepticism towards online degree programs. Do online colleges offer a quality education? Yes. Will you be able to use your online degree to land a job? Of course. Is an online degree really as valuable as a degree earned at a traditional school? Absolutely.

We’ve debunked 10 common myths that have been perpetuated by opponents of online schools. Discover the truth about online degrees so that you can make an educated decision about whether an online degree program is right for you.

Top 10 Online Degree Myths:

  1. Earning an online degree is easier. You may not want to believe this one, but getting your degree online is just as time consuming and requires an equal amount of hard-work and effort in order to succeed in your online courses.
  2. A personal computer is mandatory for attending online school. Although it is helpful to have a personal computer so that you can complete your coursework completely on your own time, it is most certainly not required. Students who do not own a personal computer, or who lack a high-speed internet access at home, can easily use the computers at their local library or internet café.
  3. Employers will not accept an online degree. This used to be true. However, with the vast improvements that online degree programs have made in the past several years, employers increasingly value online degrees just as much as a degree earned from a traditional school.
  4. Online schools do not have the same services as traditional colleges. Student services are an important aspect of a successful college. Many online schools can deliver the same amount of services as their bricks-and-mortar school counterparts. Resources that every student should seek include, tutoring services, career resources, admissions assistance, computer services and technical support, bookstores, academic advising and registration and information and library services.
  5. Online schools value technology more than education. Without technology, online schools would not exist. On the other hand, the purpose of online schools is first and foremost, to educate the enrolled students. Often online schools have a simple structure with a discussion forum, pages for test-taking and an area for turning in completed assignments. Additional media on CD’s, DVD’s or that are available for download may also be included. But these supplements are always relevant to the course and add a level of depth that could not be achieved through a written outline.
  6. There are no deadlines at online schools. There are always deadlines with online schools. Many are structured similarly to classes at a traditional school, so that you must turn in assignments and participate in discussions at least once per session.
  7. Credits from an online school are nontransferable. Transferring credits from one school to another has always been a difficult process, and it is not different with online schools. Regardless, your credits from an online school are 100% transferable to another school.
  8. There is no personal attention from professors. Online schools understand the value of teacher to student interaction. This is why many have initiated several services to encourage constant interaction such as message boards, conference calls, live lectures and frequent chats.
  9. Every online degree is exactly the same. Just as with any other college, online schools are not created equally. Some have an easier curriculum, while others are more rigorous. A detailed online college search will ensure that you receive the quality of education that you are looking for.
  10. There is no interaction in online courses. This is actually the complete opposite. Online students find that there is often more interaction with students and teachers than at a traditional school. Frequent discussions allow students who normally have trouble thinking on their feet the time to formulate clear and concise answers.
