It’s always great to give back, and college offers numerous ways for you to get involved with community service. These student organizations are a great way to make a positive impact on the lives of others while also offering a relaxed and friendly environment to meet other people.

Volunteering means you can commit as much or as little time as fits your needs and schedule. College is a time in which you gain new perspectives on life, and community service can provide you with experiences that classrooms cannot.

Community Service Programs

  • Do you have an interest in joining the Peace Corps after graduation? Knox College is the first school in the country to have an official Preparatory Program for Peace Corps and other international services. Designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of what working abroad will be like post-college, the program educates student on international culture, foreign language, and community service work abroad.
  • The Oberlin College Immerse Yourself in Service (IYS) organization provides students with a community service trip during academic breaks. In 2011, students were sent to the coast of New Orleans, a Native American Reservation in South Dakota, and Camp Victory in Pennsylvania for spring break.
  • The Greek system at nearly every U.S. University participates in community service and philanthropy in some form. At Vanderbilt University, each fraternity and sorority must have at least 75% of the house complete at least 15 hours of community service each year. Examples of community service include restoration projects and Habitat for Humanity.
  • Do you enjoy working with kids? Boston University has been hosting a Children’s Theatre in which volunteers write, rehearse, and perform shows for children at hospitals, after school programs, and community centers throughout the area. A time commitment of two hours a week is all that is required.
  • Every year, Boston College hosts Hoops for Hope, a three-on-three basketball tournament, with the goal of raising money for cancer support. Even if you decide just to play, you’ll be contributing to a great cause!

Don’t think that community service has to be a chore. The common denominator between all of the aforementioned programs is that students and faculty members work together to ensure sure you will enjoy yourself, while also making new friends. Prestamos y Finanzas en tiempos de crisis pag 88
