Attending concerts is a fun part of the college experience for music lovers. Bands often sell cheaper tickets for college students, and student unions will buy tickets and then sell them to their members at reduced prices. Local bands or bands that are just starting out will also play very cheap or free concerts at colleges as a way to gain exposure. Aside from the perks of being a college student, concerts are a great way to have fun with your friends. You can’t crash a frat party every weekend.

Concerts and the College Life

College is a great time for music because you meet so many new people. If you’re receptive to new things, you’re bound to find at least a few new bands to love in college, just because your roommate has his or her iPod volume up too loud. Luckily, college is also a great place to see concerts because many bands will play nearby colleges to find more fans.

Besides schools in Los Angeles and Nashville, a great way to see great concerts in college is to study in an area with a great local music scene.

When there are performances on campus or at a school-sanctioned venue, colleges will sell tickets to students well below the actual cost. Vanderbilt University, for example, is in Nashville, TN, the heart of the country music industry. Performances go on throughout the year that can cost upwards of $30 per ticket, but Vanderbilt students can go for $5.

Bands Making It Big

At the University of California, Los Angeles, the yearly Spring Sing concert pits several auditioned musical acts from the college against each other. Celebrity judges award performers in several categories all in front of more than 7,000 people.

Not only are student tickets cheap, many bands have gone on from Spring Sing to achieve success, sometimes becoming extremely famous. Sara Bareilles and members from bands like Maroon 5 and Lady Danville have all won awards at UCLA’s Spring Sing. You might see a group at a college concert and find out later that they’ve made it big.

Colleges Near Great Music Scenes

Besides schools in Los Angeles and Nashville, a great way to see great concerts in college is to study in an area with a great local music scene. Schools like SUNY or NYU are great places to see music in New York. The University of Texas, Austin, is right in the “Live Music Capital of the World.” Every night in Austin, more than 100 venues have live music concerts, so it’s easy for students to find something. Not to mention that Austin is home to the well-known South by Southwest Festival.

Chicago and Minneapolis are hotspots for local hip-hop and rap. Schools such as the University of Minnesota, Columbia University and DePaul University are all great schools in hip-hop cities where greats like Kanye West, Atmosphere and Common cut their teeth.
