Plenty of schools have famous historical figures as alumni, but which ones nurtured the people that are currently changing our world? These colleges taught their students to go fight the good fight.

Wesleyan University

Hero: Majora Carter

In 2001, Bronx-born Majora Carter started Sustainable South Bronx, the group that was responsible for the green jobs training and placement program Bronx Environmental Stewardship Training. She went on to create the Majora Carter Group, which is dedicated to urban revitalization. Before building her heart-of-gold empire, Carter got her BA in film from Wesleyan University in 1988 and her MFA from New York University in 1997.

Miami Dade College

Heroes: Gaby Pacheco, Juan Rodriguez, Felipe Matos, Carlos Roa

In January of 2010, four undocumented Miami Dade College students (Gaby Pacheco, Juan Rodriguez, Felipe Matos and Carlos Roa) marched a full 1,500 miles in support of the DREAM Act, a piece of legislation pushing to give permanent citizenship to undocumented students. After the march (which came to be known as the Trail of Dreams), inspired students all over the country lead similar demonstrations. Though the controversial proposition didn’t pass, these four “Trail of Dreams” students will forever be recognized for their brave effort toward effecting change.

Duke University and Harvard University

Heroes: Bill and Melinda Gates

Melinda Gates, who earned both a bachelor’s degree and a business degree from Duke University, and Bill Gates, who dropped out of Harvard University as an undergrad, have not only gone on to become wealthy and successful; they’ve also become two of the most well-respected philanthropists of our time. The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation has played an integral role in raising funds to rectify problems surrounding global health, development and policy.

Wellesley College

Hero: Farhana Khera

Activist Farhana Khera founded the group Muslim Advocates, an organization focused on bringing equality to Americans of all different faiths. Before attending law school at Cornell University, Khera got her BA in political science and economics at Wellesley College. University of Notre Dame

Hero: Lt. Col. Victor J. Fehrenbach

Lt. Col. Victor J. Fehrenbach, the highest-ranking openly gay air force member, played an important role in getting our country’s “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy removed -- Obama repealed the policy in 2011 after examining four key cases, Fehrenbach’s being one of them. Before serving our country and making important political waves, Fehrenbach graduated from the University of Notre Dame in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in government and international relations.
