With the economy in a full-blown recession, many people are trying to find a more stable career path. In many cases, this means going back to school to get some higher education, whether that means an associates degree, a bachelors degree or a certificate from a career college. There are many careers out there that are still in demand right now, and with a little additional education, you’ll be in a better position to withstand these tough economic times.

Medical Careers

Training to be a medical assistant or a nurse is a solid career option when times are tough. People always get sick, and doctors and hospitals always need help taking care of them. There are programs to help you train as a medical assistant at career colleges and junior colleges, and you could be ready to work sooner than you think. In many cases, you could take online classes for the majority of your courses and only need to come into the classroom for lab classes, which allows you to accelerate your studies. Other Nursing degrees can be obtained at many 4-year colleges and universities, and now is a great time to get a nursing degree because hospitals really need nurses. There are jobs to be had in this field across the country, so you should be able to start your career as soon as you graduate, wherever you are.

Safety Careers

Every town and city in the country needs firefighters and police officers to keep people safe. It’s a great time to train for these careers, and career colleges and junior colleges are the places to get this training. There are also options at these schools to train to be a paramedic, which is also a high-demand career. If you are handy with tools and enjoy working with your hands, you can get a contractor’s license at a career college. Right now, cities and states also need workers to help maintain roads, bridges, public buildings, water systems, and all the various other systems and plants that make up the urban and suburban landscape. This includes sewer and power grids, security infrastructures, roadways and airports and the rest of the public works we use every day. See what courses are offered at your local career college and through online schools.

Educational Careers

Do you like being around kids? Our children need teachers and teaching assistants. Many 4-year colleges and universities offer teaching credential programs that include bachelors degrees so those students who need the whole package can get everything they need to secure a steady education career. For students who already have a bachelors degree, these same schools also offer the education courses required to complete your teaching credentials so you’re all ready to get into the classroom.

Service Careers

Even in tough times, people still need services like haircuts, auto repair, plumbing, and even funeral services for loved ones. You could be the person they call when they need help. Career colleges allow you to get training in a variety of thriving careers, including Cosmetology/Cosmetologist, Culinary Arts, Automobile/Automotive Mechanics Technology/Technician, Plumbing Technology/Plumber, Mortuary Science and Embalming/Embalmer, etc. If you’re interested in starting your own business, this could be the right direction for you.
