Sophomore year is a breeding ground for confused and underprepared students. But not to worry, with help from your guidance counselor and a little bit of organization on your part, these kinds of sophomore ailments can be easily cured.

To start, set up a meeting with your counselor, then follow these six tips to become more organized during your sophomore year:

1. Discuss your college plan. Has it changed recently? Talk about what kind of majors, degrees, and careers you’re interested in.

2. Have a conversation about what types of colleges you’re looking at. Are you interested in a private college or a public university? Large or small? Near or far?

3. Review your college prep schedule and identify any weak or unnecessary courses. Remember that colleges prefer four years of core material: history, math, science, foreign language, and English.

4. Talk about any specific college requirements you’ll need to address as you proceed through high school. Fit those requirements into your schedule as soon as possible.

5. Discuss your long-term schedule and your priority classes. If you can, try to complete all your academic requirements by the end of your junior year.

6. Grab a snack and a drink on your way out. You earned it.
