Over 24 colleges call Rhode Island home, including the historical Brown University, founded before the American Revolution and known today for its state of the art research facilities. Rhode Island financial aid comes in the form of scholarships, grants and student loans.

The Rhode Island Higher Education Assistance Authority offers a couple of scholarship opportunities to state residents. The two scholarship and grant opportunities offered by the state government of Rhode Island include:

  1. State Grant Program: Open to all Rhode Island residents who are attending school on at least a half-time basis.
  2. Academic Promise Eligibility Requirements: A renewable $2,500 scholarships awarded to 100 graduating Rhode Island high school seniors who will be attending a college or university in the United States.

Scholarships from Rhode Island Colleges and Universities

Scholarships are also provided by Rhode Island colleges for enrolled students. Scholarships offered by the schools may be based on financial need, merit, sports abilities, special talent, ethnicity, a combination and more. For example, the Rhode Island School of Design provides scholarship opportunities to ranging between $500 and $27,500 each year to over one-third of the student population.

More scholarship, grant and student loan opportunities may be available at colleges and universities located in cities with a large college population. The top five colleges with the most number of colleges and universities include Providence, Warwick, Pawtucket, Cranston and Newport.

Other Scholarships in Rhode Island

Other scholarships in Rhode Island may be located through soliciting community foundations. Many organizations, businesses and associations in Rhode Island offer members of their community scholarships to help pay for their postsecondary education.

  1. Rhode Island Foundation Scholarships: A large database of private scholarships offered to Rhode Island residents based on a variety of criteria.
  2. Rhode Island Press Association: In order to apply, students must be interested in a career in print journalism, though they need not be majoring in journalism to be eligible to apply.
  3. Rhode Island Pilots Association: Qualified candidates who are seeking flight training or a related aviation degree program approved by the scholarship committee are encourages to apply to this scholarship.
  4. The College Crusade of Rhode Island Scholarship: Students must be graduates of a Rhode Island high school and be pursuing a postsecondary education at a participating school.
  5. Rhode Island Scholarship Organization: A database of several scholarship opportunities specific to participating Rhode Island public and private schools.

Rhode Island Student Loans

The Rhode Island Student Loan Authority offers the Rhode Island Family Education Loan at a low-cost for undergraduate and graduate students.
