If you’re planning to join the Army National Guard (ARNG) or Air National Guard (ANG) and also want to pursue a college degree, you can receive tuition assistance to help you pay for college.

The ARNG and ANG each have their own terms for providing this money for college. However, both offer a variety of college financial aid to help its members complete a college education.

Members of the Activated Guard and Reserve of the Air National Guard are eligible to receive 100% tuition and related fees up to $250 for each semester credit hour and up to $4,500 for each fiscal year.

What Are the National Guard Tuition Assistance (TA) Programs?

The Army National Guard offers the TA program to part-time soldiers who are pursuing an undergraduate degree program. If more college funding is available, this program also covers tuition costs of a masters degree.

The Air National Guard provides state education benefits for all of its members, as well as federal tuition assistance for courses completed through distance learning programs.

How Much College Aid Can You Receive?

In the Army National Guard, soldiers are eligible to for 100% of federal tuition assistance, up to $250 for each semester credit hour, and not above $4,500 per fiscal year. You can also receive reimbursement for related course fees up to $500. Some states may also offer TA payment, while others provide different kinds of tuition incentives.

In the Air National Guard, you can pursue an associates degree through the Community College of the Air Force and earn college credit, which will cut down the time and money you spend on a degree program.

What Are Additional Educational Benefits of Joining the National Guard?

The Army National Guard offers the Montgomery GI Bill to provide college money for books, expenses and fees, which are not covered by the TA program. Soldiers can also receive up to $50,000 in repayment of college loans and a number of scholarships, including the Guaranteed Reserve Forces Duty Scholarships and Dedicated ARNG ROTC Scholarships.

The Air National Guard offers its members the Montgomery GI Bill, repayment of existing college loans and additional financial aid incentives. States may provide its Air National Guard members with additional college financial aid, which can include waivers and repayment of college loans.
