Meet With a Guidance Counselor to Plan Ahead for College
Previous Article Next ArticleYour parents will have plenty of opinions about your education so don’t hesitate to bring them to your first counselor meeting.
Your counselor can help you navigate the college application process.
As you proceed through your college search, you’re going to become very acquainted with your guidance counselor. You won’t be on a first-name basis (because that’s inappropriate for teacher types), but you’ll be close. You should schedule your first student-counselor meeting as early as possible so you can get on the same page sooner rather than later. Be prepared to talk about your high school plans, what academic subjects you’re interested in, and what types of careers you see yourself pursuing down the line.
Questions to ask your counselor
As you discuss your plans for high school, college, and beyond, make sure you work these types of question into your discussion:
- What kinds of extracurricular activities should I get involved in?
- Which schools offer the majors and/or degrees I’m interested in?
- Based on my career and academic goals, what type of college do you suggest I look into?
- Which classes should I take now to prepare for college?
