Florida Financial Aid

In addition to Florida scholarships, grants and student loans, there are programs to help students in untraditional ways. One example is the Talented Twenty Program in which students in the top 20% of their class are given priority in being accepted to state universities and for need-based financial aid. Other programs such as the Florida Work Experience Program (FWEP) that offers students pursuing a teachers degree at participating Florida colleges and universities a work opportunity that provides them with an amount of money specified by each institution.

Florida Scholarships and Grants

Florida scholarships and grants are a great resource for students who are residents of the state. Use our scholarship search to view, sort, and filter Florida scholarships.

The Office of Student Financial Assistance (OSFA) administers all scholarships and grants offered by the state.

  1. First Generation Matching Grant Program: Based on financial need, this grant offers to match funding on a one to one dollar basis with a private source. It is only open to students whose parents have not earned a bachelors degree or higher.
  2. Florida Bright Futures Scholarship Program: Eligible candidates are Florida residents who have been given the Academic Top Scholars award. After applying, students names are place into a lottery and three names are randomly chosen.
  3. Minority Teacher Education Scholarship Program: In an effort to boost the minority teacher population, the Florida Fund for Minority Teachers (FFMT) provides a $8,000 - $12,000 renewable scholarship for juniors in college who have been admitted into a teacher education program at a participating school.
  4. Jose Mari Scholarship Challenge Grant Fund: Students attending undergraduate or graduate school who were born in or whose natural parent was born in a Hispanic country are eligible for this $2,000 scholarship. Students must also have maintained at least a 3.0 high school or college, depending on whether they are getting their bachelors degree or their masters degree.
  5. Mary Mcleod Bethune Scholarship (MMB): Undergraduate students attending Bethune-Cookman University, Edward Waters College, Florida A&M University or Florida Memorial University are eligible to receive up to $3,000 award towards their tuition. This is a combined merit and need-based scholarship in which students qualify for with their GPA, but the award amounts are distributed based on financial need.
  6. Robert C. Byrd Scholarship: Open to Florida residents who are pursuing a bachelors degree. This scholarship is based on academic merit.

Scholarships from Florida Colleges and Universities]

Colleges in Florida also offer scholarships specifically for Florida residents.Among others, the Florida International University offers the $500 Lucille E. Snaith Memorial Scholarship to undergraduate and graduate students in financial need who have demonstrated academic excellence in their previous school. The University of Tampa offers the President’s Leadership Fellows, which is a $1,000 scholarship that is rewarded to 25 students who show strong leadership abilities.

Each city in Florida has a different atmosphere, so students should consider what city they want to attend college in. The top five cities with the most colleges in Florida include, Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, Orlando and Fort Lauderdale.

Other Scholarships for Florida

Private foundations in Florida communities offer scholarships and grants to students who are residents of the state. Many scholarships may only be used towards Florida college tuition, however some might be allow students to use the funding for any school in the country.   1. Minority Teacher Education Scholarship: Students must be at least in their junior year of teaching education in addition to being classified as a racial minority. The award amount it $4,000, which is dispersed in $2,000 increments between the two semesters.
  2. Florida Woman’s State Golf Association: Golfers who are not skilled enough to get an athletic scholarship can apply to the Sarah E. Huneycutt Scholarship if they have a GPA of 3.0 or higher.
  3. Salute to Education Scholarship: High school students from Miami-Dade or Broward County public or private high school and who maintain a GPA of 3.0, and who will be attending a Florida college or university may apply for this scholarship.
  4. Florida Engineering Scholarships: Several scholarships are administered to students pursuing an engineering degree.
  5. Sea Florida Scholarships: In order to be eligible for these scholarships, the student must major in marine biology or a related program.
  6. Florida Strawberry Growers Association: Awarding students with scholarships since 1983, this scholarship awards $500 to students based on academic merit.

Florida Student Loans

The OSFA Federal Family Student Loan Program offers the John R. Justice Loan Repayment Program helps public defenders and state prosecutors who are employed for at least three years repay their student loans. In addition, the Student Loan Network of Florida has a complete list of student loans that students may apply to based off of what school they are attending.
