Many community colleges, business schools, and some four-year colleges offer hospitality degrees - preparing students for immediate entry into a career, or advancement into a bachelor’s degree program.

Associate’s Degree in Hospitality and Tourism Curriculum

The associate’s degree program is designed to teach students the fundamentals of the travel and hotel industry.

Hospitality and tourism students learn basic business skills, such as accounting, finance, marketing, and public relations. Beyond business, students also learn proper housekeeping techniques, planning menus for food service, and seasonal tourism.

Customer service is a major part of this occupation, so courses tend to teach students basic customer service etiquette for dealing with common situations, such as how to handle customer complaints.

A few courses you might see in your curriculum include:

Business Administration

Seasonal Tourism

Hospitality management

Food Safety and Sanitation

Hospitality Accounting

If you know what type of career you want to pursue after graduation, it is helpful to find a program that allows you to specialize in that field. For example, if you want to manage a hotel restaurant, look for an associate’s degree in hospitality and restaurant management.

Some programs are tailored to provide students with hands-on experience in hospitality during their associate’s degree program. These programs have students spend part of their time in the classroom learning business management, and the other part completing an internship or working in a restaurant.
