Minnesota Financial Aid

There are over 150 colleges in Minnesota that offer degrees in nearly every type of major. Financial aid is available for students attending all of Michigan colleges and universities. Michigan residents may obtain financial aid from a variety of sources including scholarships, grants and student loans.

Minnesota Scholarships and Grants

Minnesota scholarships and grants are an important part of the educational environment in Minnesota. Use our scholarship search to view, sort, and filter scholarships in Minnesota.

The Minnesota Office of Higher Education (MOHE) administers several state-funded scholarships and grants to Minnesota residents. Here is a list of scholarships and grants offered by the agency:

  1. Minnesota State Grant: Minnesota residents who are high school graduates and are attending one of the 130 participating schools are eligible for this award.
  2. Minnesota Achieve Scholarship: Eligible students are those who have graduated from a Minnesota high school and took a rigorous program of study. Students must also attend an eligible public or private Minnesota college or university.
  3. Minnesota Child Care Grant: Low-income Minnesota parents who are attending a participating college or university at least part-time can apply to this scholarships.
  4. Minnesota Indian Scholarship: Minnesota Native American students who are enrolled at a accredited postsecondary institution in Minnesota are eligible. Students must also qualify for either a Pell or State Grant. The award amounts to $4,000 for undergraduates and $6,000 for graduate students.
  5. Minnesota GI Bill: Veterans who serves on or after September 11, 2001 are eligible to receive up to $1,000 in scholarships per semester. Children and spouses of persons who served in the military and who died or are totally and permanently disabled as a result of that military service are also eligible.
=Scholarships from Minnesota Colleges and Universities

Minnesota scholarships may also be offered by colleges and universities in the state. For example, the University of Minnesota – Twin Cities administers the Iron Range Scholarship, based on academic requirements and demonstration of leadership abilities. The MOHE offers a list of scholarships and grants offered by institution. Only a sampling of the scholarships offered is featured on the list, so be sure to also check the school’s Website for more scholarship opportunities.

Cities in Minnesota with a large number of colleges typically have more financial aid to offer their students. The top 5 cities in Minnesota with the greatest number of colleges are Minneapolis, Saint Paul, Rochester, Duluth and Moorhead.

Other Scholarships in Minnesota

Minnesota residents may also find scholarships offered by community organizations and foundation. Just like state administered scholarships, they are based on financial need, merit, sports and special interests.

  1. Minnesota Professional Engineers Foundation: Students attending a ABET accredited engineering program at a Minnesota college or university are eligible for this scholarship. The award is also based on other criteria including a short essay, activities and letters of recommendation.
  2. Minnesota High Tech Foundation (MHTF) Scholarship Program: Six $2,000 awards and three $10,000 awards are offered to students in science, technology, engineering and math programs in Minnesota colleges or universities.
  3. Minnesota American Federation of Labor and Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO) Scholarships: Offers three scholarships to union members or their children to be used at a postsecondary institution in Minnesota.
  4. The American Legion Memorial Scholarship: A need-based scholarship offered to children or grandchildren of an American Legion or American Legion Auxiliary member.
  5. Central Minnesota Community Foundation: A scholarship database with a total of 77 scholarships offered to students in central Minnesota and other parts of the state.
  6. Saint Paul Foundation Scholarships: There are 44 scholarships offered by this foundation.

Minnesota Student Loans

Minnesota students who are unable to fund their full tuition costs with scholarships should apply for student loans. Minnesota students can benefit from the state administered SELF Loan before applying to federal loans, which is a long-term, low-interest loan for students attending a postsecondary institution in-state or out-of-state.
