NBA players command some of the highest salaries and most glamorous lifestyles of all professional sports players in the world. It’s hard to believe sometimes that many of them are the same kids who thrilled us during March Madness and college basketball.

Where did Past MVP’s Go to College?

The 2011 NBA Most Valuable Player was Derrick Rose of the Chicago Bulls. Before he became the youngest NBA player ever named MVP, he played for the University of Memphis. Rose is also the first basketball MVP to have attended college since the 2005-06 season.

MVP Steve Nash of the Phoenix Suns attended Santa Clara University; while Dirk Nowitzki, Kobe Bryant and Lebron James won MVP awards, but never attended college.

Where did the Highest Paid NBA Players Go to College?

The highest paid NBA player in 2011 that attended college was Tim Duncan, who went to Wake Forest University. He made $18.7 million last season with the San Antonio Spurs.

The next highest paid NBA player was Michael Redd of the Milwaukee Bucks. He made $18.3 million last year, and previously attended the Ohio State University.

Gilbert Arenas of the Washington Wizards made $17.7 million last year. He played for the University of Arizona.

Zach Randolph plays for the Memphis Grizzlies, and earned $17.3 million dollars last season. In college, he played basketball for the Michigan State University Spartans.

Where did NBA Legends Go to College?

The great Michael Jordan, who won six NBA championships with the Chicago Bulls, went to the University of North Carolina. He returned to UNC in 1986 to complete his degree in Cultural Geography.

Larry Bird played for Indiana State University before getting drafted by the Boston Celtics. He later moved back to Indiana to coach the Pacers. His friend and chief rival, Magic Johnson of the Los Angeles Lakers, attended Michigan State University.

Kareem Abdul-Jabbar played for UCLA before getting drafted by the Milwaukee Bucks. He later played for the Los Angeles Lakers, and has won six national championships, six MVP awards and holds the record for career points scored with 38,387.

Shaquille O’Neal recently retired from the NBA after 19 extremely successful years playing for several teams, notably the LA Lakers and Miami Heat, which he helped bring to national championship wins. Shaq played for Louisiana State University before joining the NBA.
