The Town: Austin, Texas

Founded on the banks of the Colorado River, Austin, Texas, is the state capital and home to more than 790,000 people. One of the most eclectic cities in the country, the “Keep Austin Weird” campaign celebrates the diverse mix of people from all professions and backgrounds that make up the population. Located in the southern half of the state, Austin residents can expect humid summers and warm winters.

The School: University of Texas

The Austin skyline is highlighted by “The Tower,” part of the Beaux Arts Main Building that can be seen throughout the entire city. With 38,000 undergraduates and nearly 13,000 graduate students, the University of Texas, Austin, is one of the largest and most academically renowned public universities in the United States.

Although UT-Austin boasts good teams in many sports, it’s best-known for its football and baseball prowess.

The football team is annually ranked in the top 10, winning national championships in 1963, 1969, 1970 and 2005. The baseball team has won the College World Series six times: 1949, 1950, 1975, 1983, 2002 and 2005.

What To Do

Social life at UT-Austin centers on 6th Street, where you can find live music, bars and restaurants. Tens of thousands of students flood 6th Street each year to celebrate New Year’s Eve, Mardi Gras and Halloween.

Started in 1987, South by Southwest (SXSW) is an annual film, music, and multimedia festival/conference that is held every spring. The event is a combination of panels featuring industry speakers as well as live concerts and film screenings.

If you’d like a breather from all the city has to offer, take a dip in the Barton Springs Pool, open year-round.

Where to Eat

Texas is famous for its barbecue, and Stubbs BBQ is among the best that Austin has to offer. The restaurant hosts weekly concerts that have included the likes of Willie Nelson and Johnny Cash. Every Sunday, it features Gospel Brunch Sundays, which offers live gospel music and an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Did You Know?

The school’s mascot is a Texas Longhorn nicknamed Bevo, and a live animal has been used at football games since 1916.
