The South Dakota Department of Education administers several state scholarships to residents of the state. These scholarships are usually need-based or merit-based, but others may be judged according to different criteria such as ethnicity or special talents. Here is a list of all scholarships offered by the state.

  1. Hagen-Harvey Scholarship: Students who are enrolled members an American Indian Tribe whose reservation is located in South Dakota may apply for this renewable scholarship of at least $1,000.
  2. Robert C. Byrd Scholarship: Based on merit, this scholarship is awarded to students who meet the required academic standards including a 3.5 GPA and an ACT score of above 30.
  3. US Senate Youth Program Scholarship: In addition to participating in this unique program that allows top students who demonstrate leadership skills to travel to Washington DC for an introduction into how our government works, accepted students are also eligible to receive a $5,000 scholarship towards the school of their choice.
  4. South Dakota Opportunity Scholarship Program: Students must be South Dakota residents who meet certain academic requirements and attend a trade school, community college or 4-year college or university in South Dakota.
  5. South Dakota Corps Scholarship: In order to receive this scholarship, students must commit, in writing, to work in a critical need occupation in South Dakota for as many years as they receive the scholarship, plus one year.

Scholarships from South Dakota Colleges and Universities

Another place to look for scholarships in South Dakota is at the college or university that you will be attending. Scholarships offered by colleges are usually based on merit, department, financial need, sports abilities, special talents, ethnicity, a combination and more. Scholarship applications may be found in the school’s financial aid department, while other schools automatically consider applicants for scholarships based off their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

There may be more scholarships, grants and other financial aid available at colleges in South Dakota located in cities that have a large number of colleges. The cities with the most colleges and universities in South Dakota include, Sioux Falls Colleges, Rapid City Colleges, Aberdeen Colleges, Mitchell Colleges and Vermillion Colleges.

Other South Dakota Scholarships

Other scholarships in South Dakota come from organizations and private businesses within the community who provide scholarships to students from the state.

  1. South Dakota Agri-Business: Members, employees and family members of both are welcome to apply to this $1,000 scholarship.
  2. Sioux Falls Area Community Foundation: A large database of scholarships awarded to students in the Sioux Falls area and other parts of South Dakota.
  3. American Indian Science and Engineering College: Offers seven scholarships to students of Native American heritage.
  4. South Dakota Farmers Union Foundation: Open to children of foundation members, this scholarship awards $1,000 to 25 students who meet the criteria.
  5. South Dakota Association of Towns and Townships Scholarship: A $1,000 scholarship based on academic achievements and an essay contest.
