North Dakota Financial Aid

North Dakota has more to offer students than vast, open plains, there are also many degree programs that can be found at the 25 colleges and universities that make their home in North Dakota. Students attending any of the colleges and universities in North Dakota are eligible to receive financial aid from the state. Financial aid in North Dakota is offered in the form of scholarships, grants and student loans.

North Dakota Scholarships and Grants

State scholarships and grants are administered by the North Dakota University System (NDUS) to residents or students attending college in the state. Here is a list of scholarships offered by the NDUS:

  1. North Dakota Scholars Program: Between 55 and 60 freshmen entering into a North Dakota college or university receive this scholarship each year. This is a merit-based, full tuition scholarship based on the student ACT scores an GPA.
  2. ND State Student Incentive Grant (SSIG) Program: Provides up to 8500 grants each year to full time undergraduate students attending college in North Dakota.
  3. North Dakota Indian Scholarship Program: Native Americans who are attending a North Dakota college as a full-time student are eligible to apply for this scholarship.
  4. STEM Occupations Student Loan Forgiveness Program: Science, technology, engineering and mathmatics (STEM) students can recieve up to $1,500 each year that they work at an approved STEM occupation in North Dakota.
  5. Teacher Shortage Loan Forgiveness Program: This program reduces the student's loan debt if they promise to complete service obligations at an underserved school where there are teacher shortages. Each year they complete, they recieve $1,000 in loan forgiveness.
  6. ND Acadmeic and Career & Technical Education Scholarships: Students must be enrolled high school seniors who demonstrate academic excellence.

Scholarships from North Dakota Colleges and Universities

Scholarships for North Dakota students are also available at the college or university they attend. These scholarships may be based on a number of criteria including financial need, merit, ethnicity, department, a combination or many more. Applications for scholarships can usually be located in the school's department of financial aid. Some schools have common applications for all scholarships offered at the school, while other North Dakota colleges have a separate application for each scholarship.

North Dakota colleges and universities may have more financial aid available to them if they are located in a city with a large number of colleges. The top five cities in North Dakota with the most colleges and universities are Bismarck, Fargo, Grand Forks, Minot and Belcourt.

Other Scholarships in North Dakota

When starting a private scholarship search, North Dakota students should first take a look at their community organizations and foundations. Often, organizations, especially professional associations, establish scholarship funds to help students from their area obtain funding to help pay for their college tuition. To get you started on your search, here is a short list of North Dakota community scholarships:

  1. North Dakota Grain Dealers Association Educational Foundation: Each year, ten $750 scholarships are

administered to students pursuing a degree in agriculture at a North Dakota college or university.

  1. The American Legion Department of North Dakota Scholarships: Five scholarships with varying eligibility requirements are offered to North Dakota residents.
  2. North Dakota Dollars for Scholars Scholarships: Students must be attending a North Dakota school and live in a community served by a local Dollars for Scholars chapter in order to be eligible for this scholarship opportunity. Two $1,000 scholarships are awarded each year.
  3. Dollars for Country Kids: Adminstered by the North Dakota Association of Counties to children or grandchildren between the ages of 17 and 22 of county employees.

North Dakota Student Loans

In addition to providing federal student loans, the Bank of North Dakota (BND) Student Loan Services administers the Dakota Education Alternative Loan (DEAL), which provides the student with zero fees if they are attending a college in North Dakota or are a North Dakota resident. This loan is offered to students who need additional help funding their college tuition after receiving all applicable federal student aid.
