About SVU

Southern Virginia University is a liberal arts college affiliated with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Though this affiliation is unofficial, the LDS ideology permeates university policy and student life. As a result, more than 95% of Southern Virginia students are Mormons.

SVU’s academics are rooted in the liberal arts. The university intentionally offers fewer majors so that students can gain a broad and interdisciplinary educational foundation. About a dozen majors are available, as well as pre-law, pre-medicine and teacher certification programs.

Discussion-based education is a key component of Southern Virginia University’s academics. The average class size is about 15 students, allowing for plenty of interaction and mutual support.

The admissions process at Southern Virginia is fairly standard. Applicants must provide a completed application, official transcripts and ACT/SAT scores. Unlike many colleges, however, SVU also requires an ecclesiastical endorsement. The school follows a rolling admissions policy, so it’s best to apply early.

Southern Virginia University provides extensive financial aid. Institutional merit scholarships range from $1,000 to $15,000. Additional institutional grants are available for missionaries, international students and those skilled in the fine and performing arts.

Its small, quite town. You have the chance to make friends real easy. Its also private people don't bud in your business. They all reach out to help with anything. Classes are very small, you get to know your professors one on one. That's real nice

Overall Rating

I have really enjoyed my time at Southern Virginia University. It is very small, but there are many perks to that. The class sizes are kept small which make for a better learning environment and professors who know your name and care about your success. There is also a good opportunity for athletes. It is a a Division III school in a competitive conference and gives a great chance for many students to be successful college athletes. The environment of the campus is great too. Because of the LDS beliefs that the school's code of honor is based on, it is a great place to be free of the temptations of the world and focus on the more important things in life.
