About UVA

The University of Virginia (UVa) has been a pioneer in public education since Thomas Jefferson founded it nearly two centuries ago. US News and World Report consistently recognizes UVa as one of the nation’s top public universities, due to its extensive research opportunities and exceptionally strong academics.

UVa is comprised of 11 schools and colleges, through which more than 50 bachelor’s degree programs are available. The university also offers about 85 master’s degrees and nearly 60 doctoral degrees. Its graduate programs are very highly regarded, with particularly strong programs in Law, Finance, English and Business.

College life at the University of Virginia provides a variety of ways to get involved. You can submit a piece to the student-run 3.7 Magazine, join an a cappella group, or participate in a service program like Action for a Better Living Environment. Greek life is also quite active on campus, with more than 55 chapters represented.

Admissions at UVa are highly selective. More than 90% of incoming freshmen ranked in the top 10% of their high school classes, and the acceptance rate for undergraduates is typically under 15%. The application deadline is January 1 for incoming freshmen, and March 1 for transfer students. Graduate admissions vary based on the school you’re applying to.

A variety of financial aid opportunities are available for undergraduates, including federal programs, Virginia grants and institutional scholarships. Graduate students are eligible for federal loans and work-study, as well as merit-based institutional assistance.
