About Shaw University

While Shaw University is committed to offering educational opportunities to people of all backgrounds, as the oldest historically black university (HBCU) in the south, Shaw takes particular interest in providing opportunities for minorities.

Located in Raleigh, North Carolina, Shaw offers undergraduate programs in the liberal arts and sciences with degrees offered in humanities, communications, military science, religion and the visual and performing arts.

Shaw also offers several graduate degrees, a doctorate of Divinity and master’s degrees in Education.

Primarily committed to the education and success of minority groups, Shaw is also engaged in impressive research and social activities to help the conditions of African-Americans and others. Known for its research on African-American military, one of Shaw’s great accomplishments was the Medal of Honor it received from the White House for such work.

Extracurricular activities also encourage participation in the advancement of minorities, as well as character-building and leadership skills. Shaw University organizations include the Shaw Men and Shaw Women Society, and the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People or NAACP.

Freshmen and sophomore students are required to live on campus and all students are encouraged. Shaw’s residences are divided into male and female dorms and are designed to foster learning and study time.

Student services at Shaw are intended to help students in all areas of their lives while at Shaw and in their transition to graduate school or the workforce. These include academic and career services, counseling services and a health center.

Financial aid is available to eligible students through loans, scholarships and other sources and may be discussed with a financial aid counselor.
