About MIT

Widely hailed as one of the finest universities in the world, Massachusetts Institute of Technology is known for its outstanding academics and cutting-edge research. Though science and engineering remain its main focus, MIT has expanded its offerings in the arts and humanities in recent decades.

This increased emphasis on the arts has had an impact on student life, as well. Student-run theater and dance troupes allow you to develop your creativity, and many programs explore the intersection of art and technology. Plenty of athletic opportunities are available as well, from intramural sports to NCAA Division III programs.

MIT strives to continue its tradition of making tuition affordable. Today, about 20% of MIT undergraduates come from families who earn $47,000 or less. Nine out every ten undergraduate students and about 85% of graduate students receive some form of financial aid. MIT scholarships, state aid and federal grants and loans are the main sources for tuition assistance.

MIT’s admissions are among the most selective in the United States. To help your chances of getting in, it’s highly recommended that you schedule an interview. For undergraduates, the application deadline for early action is November 1, and the regular action deadline is January 1. Application procedures for graduate students vary by department.
