About Middlebury College

Middlebury College in Middlebury, Vermont, is the quintessential small New England school. For more than 200 years Middlebury has been offering prestigious and selective academic programs on a campus of historical, ivy-laced buildings. Middlebury also boasts an active campus life, unique service opportunities and an excellent financial aid program.

Middlebury awards bachelor’s degrees in the liberal arts, fine and performing arts, humanities and sciences. Probably one of its most respected programs is its world-renowned Bread Loaf Writer’s program. Bread Loaf offers degrees and summer programs for creative writers and literature majors.

Middlebury students in all majors get the benefit of small classes and intimate classroom discussions.

Since Middlebury promotes civic engagement, students also get to participate in unique service-learning activities. Students in the Projects for Peace program, for example, travel across the country interviewing veterans. There is also the Granola Gang project, a student organization that makes and distributes granola to the entire campus.

The arts are an important part of the Middlebury experience as well. In addition to literary readings hosted by Bread Loaf, there is a campus museum, a performing arts center and a theatre.

Middlebury’s admissions are competitive and, therefore, only accept about 17% of undergraduate applicants. Materials used for evaluating prospective students include an application, two academic recommendations, transcripts and SAT or ACT scores. Extracurricular activities are also considered.

Middlebury’s financial aid program is highly impressive, striving to meet 100% of each admitted student’s financial need. Sources of aid include grants, loans and scholarships.

Overall Rating

I thoroughly enjoyed my 4 years at Middlebury. The academics are strong, facilities are amazing and the setting couldn't be more beautiful. I liked the community feel of a small New England college, and appreciated the somewhat isolated environment. I highly recommend getting involved in a broad variety of extra-curricular activities. I particularly enjoyed Rugby, intramural hockey, and the East Asian Studies club.
