Overall

Carnegie Mellon is a great school if you are serious about getting a top-notch education. You are encouraged to explore multiple disciplines and are free to take well over the standard four or five classes per semester. I found myself surrounded by intelligent, motivated students who made it easy to pull the occasional all-nighters required to get the work done. I loved going to college in Pittsburgh. It’s cold and dreary with a long winter which makes it easier to stay inside and study. I highly recommend this school.

Academics

The workload is very high and the school never closes, even when it’s minus 20 degrees and snowing. In the Architecture Department, I had projects due on Sunday nights at 8pm which kept me working most weekends. Don’t go to Carnegie Mellon unless you want to work hard and be challenged. It was really tough but I loved every minute of it.

College Life

The school has a large number of fraternities and sororities but it’s not essential to join them. There were many options for sports, a great gym, a pool and the school is next door to a very large park. It’s right next to some of the best museums. There are many universities in the area so there are lots of young people around. You can join just about any organization you can imagine. Pittsburgh is a sports town like no other.

Overall

I made good friends there and the academics were on point, but the school atmosphere is tech/science heavy and a lot of the students under those majors could be kind of stuck up and towards the students in the arts and humanity disciplines (which was the category I fell under). Didn't care for the city, which seemed pretty dead for the most part.

Academics

The classes were good at Carnegie Mellon University and when I wanted to switch to an interdisciplinary major, the faculty was very helpful. I especially enjoyed working on the costume crew and other theatre courses and really liked my humanities teachers, they were great a challenging me to think about the issues up for discussion.

College Life

Carnegie Mellon is a more studious than social environment, but I made good friends through the CMAP program - which helped students of color connect with each other - but I'm not sure it's still there. I also enjoyed taking part in the Black student organization. There wasn't much as going for the school as far as the official athletic program, but the intramural sport activities were a lot of fun to participate in.
