About Georgetown University

As a Georgetown University Hoya, you’ll find yourself amidst an academic tradition that’s nearly as old as the United States. You’ll also be part of one of the most respected and well-known universities in the world, and a diverse student body of nearly 17,000 intellectually driven people.

Georgetown is divided into the following schools and colleges:

  • Georgetown College
  • McDonough School of Business
  • School of Foreign Service
  • Graduate School of Arts and Sciences
  • Law Center
  • School of Medicine
  • School of Continuing Studies
  • School of Nursing & Health Studies

About 50 undergraduate majors are available, as well as several areas of graduate study. Georgetown’s academics place an emphasis on studying abroad, offering many opportunities to do so. Approximately 60% of Georgetown students take advantage of these opportunities.

Georgetown’s location is one of its strongest features. The nation’s capital is packed with opportunities, and student life at Georgetown might include sampling the local music scene, catching a show at the National Theatre or working an internship at any number of businesses or government institutions.

Ability to pay tuition is not a factor in Georgetown’s undergraduate admissions. Because of this, the university pledges to meet its students’ demonstrated need through a variety of financial aid programs. Need-based financial aid is also available for graduate students, as well as merit scholarships, research assistantships and fellowships.

Overall Rating

Overall, Georgetown is an amazing place to go to college. The location gives you an experience that I think is unlike any other college experience. Georgetown has a real campus, so you get the feel of a small liberal arts college. It is also located within the amazing neighborhood of Georgetown, which makes it seem like a college town in a sense (one you might see at a state school). But at the same time, downtown D.C., the monuments, the museums, and the Capitol are all a short Metro ride away. Georgetown offers an amazing academic environment with plenty of the world's leading academicians and professionals actively involved in our campus. It is amazing to walk by the new Secretary of Defense's Office, to hear Secretary of State Clinton speak, and to go to a conference with Supreme Commander of NATO James L. Jones just a few feet away. Georgetown brings so many possibilities, that it is often difficult to choose between various opportunities.

Georgetown's reputation is beyond the pale. It is one of the most prestigious higher education institutions in the nation, let alone Washington DC, and graduates of Georgetown have gone on to be the leaders of rapidly globalizing world. I feel truly honored to be a part of that community, and I think that is what I like best about attending Georgetown. My peers are diverse, intellectually stimulating, and will be invaluable resources for me in my career endeavors. If I could offer a tip for prospective students, it would be to take advantage of what DC has to offer in terms of internships and career opporunities while still attending school. Georgetown has a wodnerful alumni network that students should tap into, and students should absolutely explore a wide variety of professional settings during their studies to get a better sense of what interests them. If I had to pick one memorable experience so far, it would have to be having the opportunity to hear Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai speak at Georgetown in the winter of 2013. That was truly an honor, and it's exciting to think that Georgetown has the capability to produce such fascinating speakers and guests of the university.
