By

There are some things in Rome which you cannot afford to miss, and St. Peter’s Basilica is one of them. Located in the beautiful and enchanting Vatican City, it is one of the most spiritual places of Catholicism, and Catholics from all over the world come to visit this place, which is also considered to be one of the holiest places in the world.

It was built in the year 324 AD by Emperor Constantine, and is actually located on the Vatican Hill near Tiber River. It is said that Peter the apostle, who is also regarded as the first pope, was crucified by Emperor Nero in 64 AD, and the edifice stands on the very exact location of his burial place. After that, many other popes have also been buried over here.

The original basilica as constructed by Emperor Constantine was structurally weak, which is why Pope Julius II got it reconstructed in 1506. Around 120 years were spent on completing this massive project which now stands as one of the most beautiful places in the world, with some very renowned names being a part of the reconstruction process.

The huge dome of the basilica which impresses all with its beautiful art and decoration was created by Michelangelo. His creation of Adam is a treat to the eyes as you enjoy the Sistine Chapel, which also happens to be a home to some of Raphael’s originals. However, the most magical thing in the entire Chapel which beats everything else is Michelangelo’s creation- the Pieta.

St. Peter’s Square has been designed by Bernini, and is particularly famous for the warm and welcoming appeal that it has, which was meant to symbolise that a grand church is welcoming all. It is a huge colonnade, above which are some 140 statues of different saints. Also interesting are the two beautiful fountains, one of which has been created by Bernini, while the other has been designed by Carlo Maderno. The Egyptian Obelisk is also a breathtaking site.

Visitors and tourists are advised to take guided tours over here, which helps them to explore all areas of the place and understand the deep historical significance too behind it. Restaurants nearby are good, though a hotel in the vicinity cannot be found. You will to search on the internet to find out about accommodation in hotels in nearby cities.
