Importance Of Pap Smear Test - Cervical Pap Smear Test Overview » Pap Test: Why Should You Do It?A pap test, also known as pap smear test is a procedure of determining the presence of cancerous cells or tumors in the cervix of a woman. It is useful for detecting early signs of cervical cancer or conditions which might later lead to cancer.

The procedure involves testing the cells extracted from the cervix which is the lower part of the uterus where it joins the vagina top. For a pap test, cells from the cervix are collected by using a spatula after broadening the opening of the vagina. These collected cells are then sent to the laboratory for examination.

It is important to do regular and routine pap smear tests for women who are above 21 years of age, keeping in mind the difficulty in detecting cervical cancer due to lack of apparent symptoms. This test is extremely important to determine any abnormalities which might later lead to cancer. The normal frequency of the tests should be within a gap of two years for women below 30 years of age. If tests have been earlier performed on women who are above 30, they can have a test within a gap of three years. Women who have had a hysterectomy and have had their uterus and cervix removed due to non-cancerous reasons can discontinue pap test after consultation with their doctor.

The test results are usually delivered within a few weeks depending on the laboratory procedures. A repeat pap smear test might be recommended in some cases where the sample taken was not satisfactory for the test or if there has been any abnormalities reported. The results might show normal cells or there might be some abnormalities reported which might be either because of some inflammation or could be a sign of tumor or early cancerous conditions.

The doctor will explain the findings in details depending on individual cases. In case of abnormal reporting, other tests like colposcopy which involves examining the vagina and cervix with an instrument, are done. If this shows abnormal findings then there are other follow up tests which might be recommended by the doctor.

The possibility of doing routine tests is extremely narrow in third world countries where women from the rural areas have not even heard about the term cervical cancer. Also the middle class of people don’t want to use their hard earned money in doing routine tests. It is very important to make women aware about the dangers of cervical cancer and about the importance of doing pap test for early detection of the cancer.
