Lake Baikal, which is also popularly known as “Pearl of Siberia” and situated right in the heart of Central Asia, is a major International tourist attraction because of the grandeur, size and the spectacular beauty of the Siberian nature.

The deep crystal clear water and the beautiful landscape, with lush green wild forests and the majestic mountains is a scintillatingly beautiful sight. The lake is located 445 mts. above sea level in Eastern Siberia.

Famously the world’s deepest and oldest, Lake Baikal is also the worlds largest and second most voluminous lake after Caspian Sea. This lake containing one fifth of the world’s surface freshwater and set in a breathtakingly beautiful stone bowl with a depth of 745 mts.

This phenomenal high latitude lake is believed to be more than 25 million years old making it one of the world’s most ancient lake. Close to 330 river water flows into the lake feeding this water body. Breathtakingly beautiful mountain bodies surround the shoreline of the lake with the Baikal Mountain situated in the Northern shoreline.

Even though of such huge depth the lake water is well mixed and well oxygenated throughout. The ecological biodiversity of the Lake Baikal is extremely rich and varied with more than a thousand different floras and 1550 species of faunas.

One of the world’s only three freshwater seals are to be found here, also famous are the local salmonid and the ‘golomyamka’ or Baikal oil fish, which are widely sold in the local markets and is a delicacy.

Lake Baikal presents a scintillating array of sight seeing and touring for nature loving tourists. The most famous is the boating tours. More than 80% of the mountainous terrain of the shoreline is impossible to travel by land and so is rarely visited and remains totally uninhabited. But, these serenely beautiful sandy bays and rock strewed capes can be visited at close quarters in the famous boat tours.
