Consider this: Women are twice as likely as men to suffer from depression. Depression strikes women at a much younger age than men.

The episode of depression lasts longer in women. What is it that makes women more susceptible to depression? There are a host of biological, psychological and social factors. PMS (premenstrual syndrome), pregnancy and infertility, menopause and perimenopause can all create hormonal imbalances, leading to mood swings and, sometimes, depression.

Add up the demands of playing Superwoman, the challenges of playing several roles and that too with ease, gender inequalities, etc, and it’s easy to see that the psyche of a woman takes a lot of battering.

The physical symptoms of depression in women include sudden and unexplained weight gain or weight loss, changes in eating habits and sleep patterns, facing difficulty concentrating, being persistently exhausted, finding no interest in things, etc. Unfortunately, depression does not generally manifest in strong physical terms.

For example, not every woman in depression will be teary. However, the following symptoms will help make a preliminary diagnosis of depression. If you identify with more than two or three of them and they last for more than two weeks, do consult a psychologist. (Please remember that not everyone with depression experiences these symptoms. Also, every person is affected differently in terms of severity, frequency and the duration the episode lasts.)

A constant feeling of being low, sad or hopeless. If you have been feeling like a loser and no amount of encouragement has helped, it could be depression. Many women with depression believe they are the worst human beings on earth who can do no good. If your thoughts are constantly centred around sadness and pessimism, you may be in need of intervention.

Restlessness or bouts of unexplained crying. Unless there are valid reasons for crying, if you break into tears for no reason and chronically harbour negative thoughts about yourself and your loved ones, it could be a lead-up to depression. Many women in depression also start feeling restless without reason.

Being tense or anxious. Without any basis, if you feel you are on tenterhooks all the time or you are feeling tense or ill about something that doesn’t exist, it is a sign of possible depression.

Persistent anger or irritability. If you flare up without provocation or find yourself snapping at people without a reason, it shows a state of being low. It could lead to depression.

Mood swings. A typical symptom of depression is being on a high one minute only to be followed the next minute by a low. Happy-sad, elated-low, angry-calm are just some of the different mood swings possible.

Dwindling interest in relationships and sex. The libido of people with depression takes a knock. They lose interest in the everyday things of love, life and relationships.
