Singapore Health Promotion Board clearly states that trans fat raises the level of blood cholesterol – hence it is bad. But there is no definite reasons given as to why trans fat is bad for health. Recent studies have shown that trans fat is actually capable of hurting your body in more ways than just rising the cholesterol level.

We all know that there are two types of cholesterol – HDL or ‘good; cholesterol and LDL or ‘bad’ cholesterol. Trans fat manages to raise the level of bad cholesterol and at the same time lower the level of the good cholesterol. On the other saturated fats raise the level of both. So trans fat is actually worse between the two. High cholesterol level may become t cause for many heart ailments in the future. But how does trans fat causes these heart diseases?

1)    the walls of the arteries gets damaged due to the trans fat and the blood flow gets disturbed.
2)    Trans fat prevents the use of and the production of Omega – 3 Fatty Acids.

The Omega – 3 Fatty Acids actually help the body to protect itself from various heart diseases. On the other hands, saturated fats assist the body to utilize Omega – 3. So saturated fats are, in contrast, a lesser evil.

The health risks of trans fat are not restricted to cholesterol levels only. A long list of health problems are associated with trans fat namely heart ailments, cancer, obesity, miscarriage, infertility and diabetes. In fact, trans fat is said to be the single most important reason for many coronary heart diseases. In US alone trans fat has caused the death of as many as 30,000 people and all from heart diseases of various nature but from one common source – trans fat. It is believed worldwide that if trans fat is eliminated totally then a minimum of 72, 000 deaths can be prevented worldwide.

There is another danger that is associated with trans fat and that is beer bellies or accumulation of fat around the waist. Trans fat eaters tend to put on flab around their tummies and this is detrimental not only to their looks but also to their overall health.
