Swedish Meatballs Recipe

Swedish meatball is a traditional Swedish recipe, which is originally served with sweet-tart lingonberry jam, but you can also do it with egg noodles or red-currant jam. This is a versatile dish, which can be served both as an appetizer and as a main dish.

Appliances Required

1 skillet
1 stirring spoon
1 large bowl
1 pot
1 wire whisk

Ingredients Required

1 pound of ground beef
1 cup + 2 tablespoons of breadcrumbs
4 teaspoon of all-purpose flour
1 pound of ground pork
¾th cup of onion, minced
2 cups + 1/4th cup of low-sodium beef stock
1 teaspoon of ground allspice
2 tablespoons + 1 teaspoon of sour cream
2 bacon strips, minced
1 teaspoon of sugar
1 tablespoon of salt
¼th teaspoon of ground nutmeg
¼th cup of unsalted butter, at room temperature
3 eggs
1 teaspoon of ground black pepper

Method Of Cooking

1. Place a skillet on medium heat and grease it with 1 tablespoon of butter. Let the butter melt completely. Once the butter melts, add the minced onion and sauté it until it turns brown and aromatic. Then transfer the sautéed onion to a bowl and keep it aside.

2. Now put the minced bacon in the pan and cook it until it turns crispy. Once done, transfer the bacon to the bowl with the onion and turn off the stove. Now add the minced beef, minced pork, allspice, ground nutmeg, salt, sugar and the ground black pepper to the bacon in the bowl.

3. Break open the eggs and whisk them in another bowl. Once thoroughly whisked, add the eggs to the beef mixture. Now mix the beef with the other ingredients in the bowl using your hand or a spoon. All the things should be very nicely combined, or else you won’t get a rounded taste in the meat balls. Mixing with hands is obviously better than using a spoon, but you may avoid doing that if you feel hand mixing is a bit too messy.

4. Now take the bread crumbs and soak them in 1/4th cup of beef stock for 5 minutes. After that, add the moistened breadcrumbs to the beef mixture and mix nicely with your hands to combine. Then place a large pot on medium heat and melt 1 tablespoon of butter in it. Put ½ of the meatballs in the pot and fry them until the outside of meatballs are nicely browned. You may add some more oil while frying the rest of the meatballs.

5. Once all the meatballs are fried transfer them to a plate and stir in the flour with the oil. Add the remaining amount of stock and stir nicely to combine. Simmer the sauce until the sauce thickens up a bit. Then return the meatballs to the pot and cook them on low heat for about 5-7 minutes or until aromatic. Finally, stir-in the whisked sour cream and combine the sauce to nicely coat the meatballs with the sauce.
