Tunis, the capital of Tunisia, is a very compact city with quite a few must – see attractions. Tunis has a four line metro system which is very convenient and safe. You can also hire a taxi but be prepared to spend more if you are staying at a good hotel.

Tunis is well known for a number of tourist places such as the –

Bardo Museum – This is a 13th century palace of the Ottoman era and is highly revered among the tourists for its huge collection of Roman mosaics.

Dar Ben Abdallah – This is an 18th century folk museum and you find a number of exhibits such as faience, stucco ornament and costumes.

Zitouna Mosque – This is the largest mosque in Tunisia and a very important landmark among Tunisia attractions. It is important to visit this mosque dressed in a proper manner. However, non – Muslims can only enter the courtyard; they are not permitted to enter the main mosque. The mosque is surrounded on 3 sides by souks which are a treat to watch. The mosque is open everyday but on Fridays you cannot enter before 8 am and beyond 11 am.

Things to Do: Apart from these tourist attractions you can also take a walking tour of the ancient buildings, mosques and gates of the medina. There is the Theatre municipal de Tunis wherein you can catch an opera or ballet. If you have still time left then you can take a walk through the largest park of Tunis, Belvedere Park. It has the Museum of Modern Art and the municipal zoo. The park overlooks the Lake Tunis and offers a breathtaking view of the beautiful lake.

There are a number of places to stay in Tunis and most of the hotels include breakfast in their rates and some include even dinner along with breakfast. There also good restaurants in the city which offers a hearty meal. The best eating place in Tunis is definitely the Dar el – Jeld. The food here is awesome and the restaurant has people who speak both English and French.

The menu is a bit complicated but you can easily get help from one of the waiters. The price of a main course is usually around 30 dinars. Among the hotels, Sheraton Tunis Hotel and Towers is highly recommended. The hotel is located in the central business district and overlooks the city.
