Istanbul, previously known as Byzantium names after King Byzas in 667 BC and later known as Constantinople named after Roman King Constantine is one of the most fascinating tourist destinations in the world. It is truly a city of contrasts and mythical legends. Its historic castles, churches, mosques and temples, domes and minarets have witnessed many mighty empires like the Roman, Byzanite and Ottoman and speak of their various traditions and cultures.

The Topkapi Palace is a “must see” for the tourists. It was the crown jewel of the Ottoman Empire and is the embodiment of its affluence and grandeur. The views of the river Bosphorous from the palace are breathtaking.

Hagia Sophia is a marvelous museum that was built in the 6th century by the Emperor Justinian and was one of the largest basilicas of Christians and was later converted to mosque after the Ottoman conquered the place. One can see the fine Byzantine mosaics here.

Blue Mosque or the Sultan Ahmet Mosque is a blend of the Turkish and Islamic Culture and is made in the Ottoman style. It is famous for its six heavenly minarets. The visitors have to remove their shoes and be dressed aptly to enter the mosque.

The Grand Bazaar is the oldest market that is known to exist since the 14th century. It spans over 58 streets and 4000 shops. Everything ranging from jewellery, pottery, carpets, handicrafts, spices and leather goods can be found here. Herba medicine is also known to be found here.

Maiden’s Tower-This famous tower is the symbol of Istanbul. No visit to Istanbul is complete without visiting the Haman and experiencing the famous Turkish baths.

The Tile Kiosk Museum, previously used as Empire Museum is open for the public as Faith Museum and the Turkish and Islamic artworks and displayed here. The mansion is decorated with mosaic china and has and ceramics of the Ottoman period.

Other interesting places are the Egyptian Obelisk, Serpentine Column, and Fountain of Wilhem II. One can get a breathtaking view from the harbour Golden Horn, which is an arm of Bosphorous. Here one can see the harbour separating the old and new Istanbul. The Bosphorus between Europe and Asia connects the Black Sea to the Marmara Sea. Istanbul is truly a romantic place.
