Tunisia is the smallest country on Africa’s northern coast. In north, the rugged Atlas Mountains penetrate Tunisia from neighbouring Algeria, while much of the southern part of the country is occupied by the arid Sahara Desert and numerous chotts-marshy salt-encrusted lakes formed in drainage-less depressions.

The largest of these, Chott Jerid, is the seventh largest lake of Africa. It abounds in snakes, vipers and Scorpio. Wild boars, jackals’ mouflons, etc are seen in the wilderness.
