Vitamin B12, an essential thing for life is helpful in maintaining a healthy nervous system and also is a vital factor for the production of red cells in the blood in a human body. Vitamin B12 also helps to make DNA which is a genetic material in the cells. Because of the vitamin B12 deficiency the disruption of DNA production occurs and certain abnormal cells are developed that leads to anemia.

The nutritional deficiency of vitamin B12 is not that common, as the human body is able to store many a years worth of this vitamin. Vitamin B12 is soluble in water, but its excretion is not so quick in the urine.  Daily need of the Vitamin B12 is in small quantity and the same is not well absorbed by human body.

Vitamin B12 is found only in animal origin foods like meat, liver, poultry, dairy products and fish. It is not available in fruits or vegetables. Vitamin B12 deficiency is likely to be there in adults over 60 years of age. Vegetarians should go in for some other source of this vitamin to avoid further complications due to vitamin B12 deficiency. For adults above 50 years fortified foods and the synthetic supplements serves as the good source of Vitamin B12.

By eating a chicken breast, one boiled egg, one cup of milk and one cup raisin bran, required vitamin B12 for a day can be obtained. As the plants are not giving vitamin B12, the vegetarians should look for some other alternate methods for the vitamin like the use of cereals for breakfast, soy milk, vegetable margarines etc.

While Food stuffs such as liver, clams and other mollusks are having a very high vitamin B12 contents, some other good source of complex vitamins are beef, fish and fortified cereals for breakfast.

As the deficiency of vitamin B12 can lead to anemia and create other complications in our nervous system, prevention is a vital factor for the people irrespective of their ages. The most effective and common treatment is B12 supplements in human body by injection or orally. Pure vegetarians are recommended to take a B12 supplement as they could become anemic more easily.
